During the most recent Texas Legislative session, House Bill 1481 was passed and signed into law by Gov. Abbott as part of a statewide initiative to promote focused learning environments and restrict the use of student personal devices.
The new law prohibits students from using the following personal electronic devices during the school day:
- Cell phones
- Smart watches (includes fitness trackers with texting/calling capabilities)
- Bluetooth earbuds/headphones (includes Air Pods)
- Tablets (includes iPads and gaming devices)
It is important to note that this policy will not apply to CFBISD-issued devices. HB 1481 outlines exceptions in which personal devices may be used if:
- A student’s IEP or 504 Plan requires access to a personal communication device
- A physician's order is on file for a medical need that requires a personal communication device
- A school administrator grants permission to a personal communication device for safety or legal reasons
- A school-issued device used specifically for instruction/learning
- An administrator-approved laptop used for instructions as an alternative to the district's 1:1 program
Please know that CFBISD is required to implement this state-mandated initiative and is in the process of developing an updated electronic device policy.
CFB will share details regarding policy procedures and enforcement once guidelines are finalized. Procedures are expected to go into effect the first day of school Aug. 12.
