Guided by a months-long process and committee-established criteria, the proposal recommends the consolidation of Central Elementary, Furneaux Elementary, McCoy Elementary and Long Middle schools.
“We understand that these recommendations can be difficult to process for many of our students, staff and families,” said Superintendent Dr. Wendy Eldredge. “This has been a challenging process but we are confident we can get through this with the strength, passion, love and support of our CFB Family.”
The presentation detailed factors considered to identify schools for potential consolidation. These included fiscal responsibility, efficiency, student achievement, equity and district competitiveness.
If approved, savings of up to $9 million are projected within the first year. Additionally, the recommendation would reduce more than 2,300 empty seats across the district, improve transportation efficiency and allow more students to be closer to their programs of choice.
The recommendation also requires the district to consider new attendance zones, which have not been considered for more than 20 years despite population and demographic shifts. If the proposal is approved, the majority of campuses will see some adjustments within their attendance zones, but most students are anticipated to remain at their current school.
Facility reuse proposals include the Furneaux property as a possible Pre-K center, McCoy as a possible sale of land, and Central and Long as temporary classrooms while other campuses are under construction.
A plan to provide staff and family support was also announced, with district leadership hosting staff meetings at the four campuses recommended for consolidation Friday morning. Families of the campuses identified for consolidation will be invited to information sessions to learn more and ask questions.
Trustees will vote on the consolidation recommendation during the March 6 regular meeting.
